Marshall Baumgartner is a film and video producer and director specializing in television commercials ranging from the truly commercial (Steak n Shake thru St. Vincent Hospitals) all the way to the cheesy commercial ("Coming to a city near you" Nationally Tour Bands). Based out of Indianapolis, he has traveled the country for advertising, music festivals, film festivals, and tour managing the band Margot & the Nuclear So and Sos. Marshall pays his bills by working as a Marketing Editor for Tourdesign, a division of Livenation (the enemy!), specializing in tour and concert promotion.
Discovering his passion for live music in college, Marshall toured the country with bands like the String Cheese Incident and Phish. His first solid live music video project was a senior seminar project titled, Talking in Teen, focusing on "the communication and relationship aspects of improvisational jazz music" based on am improv jazz funk fusion quartet called SFJ. Following that with a trip to Sundance Film Festival (not his documentary…although he did get an ‘A’ on it), Marshall has followed film and never looked back.
Marshall has filmed Margot & the Nuclear So and Sos, Pravada, South, Something for Rockets, Film School, DeVotchKa, Tilly & the Wall, Kaiser Cartel, Justice, Del the Funky Homosapien, Mickey Avalon, Ztrip, the Avett Brothers, Cut Copy, Cabin, Pomegranates, Backyard Tire Fire, Cameron McGill, Otis Gibbs, Small Arms Fire, Those Young Lions, Catfish Haven, Gentleman Caller, Brazil, America Owns the Moon, and many others.
On a personal note, Marshall Baumgartner is a good friend of mine. We've had some good times together. We've run in similar circles for years, but it wasn't really until this year that we found some ways to have some fun together and combine it with "work". As stated, Marshall has filmed numerous events I've been lucky to be at or be a part of...Midwest Music Summit, Forecastle Festival, Monolith Music Festival and loads of live shows like the one below. Like me, when it comes to coverage, he's never quick about it. I don't mind, he's a busy guy. I can relate. It's often that guys like this who have a passion, have to find other ways to support and themselves. I just tell him, whenever it's ready, we'll run it. It's this relaxed attitude about enjoying the event and going with the flow in Marshall that I've always enjoyed. Sometimes things work out, sometimes they don't. When they do, it's always good. We'll be featuring a lot more of Marshall's work in the near future, but we wanted to start here...
As you can see below, we were lucky enough to film The Avett Brothers' show at The Vogue Theater here in Indianapolis back on June 6th of 2008. The band played some new material which we can't feature, but here are six videos of songs from the past from that show. Stay tuned - we'll be featuring an in-studio session with The Avett Brothers some time in the new New Year featuring all new material from their upcoming major label release!
