Born in New York, raised in Nashville, singer-songwriter David Mead writes songs that would be right at home on the soundtrack of a film by Mike Nichols or Woody Allen. With arrangements that feel as much 1965 and as they do 2009, Mead’s modern-day standards have some recent national exposure. His song Last Train Home was recently featured both on TV’s Private Practice and on NPR.
His lyrical style may draw comparisons to current contemporaries like Aimee Mann or Richard Buckner, but on his latest album, Almost and Always, Mead is channeling an ever-changing lineup of influences from past generations. Elements of George Harrison, Nick Drake, Burt Baccarach and early Elvis Costello all seem to be present. The album is achingly beautiful — quietly synthesizing his various influences into his own unique voice.
