Deer Tick is largely the brainchild of Providence, RI's John McCauley III. He makes music that at times feels like it was written for young lovers necking for the first time at a Sadie Hawkins dance and at others like it belongs right alongside Billy Bragg or Jeff Tweedy. The band’s most recent album, Born on Flag Day, is a thoroughly modern album, but paradoxically seems right at home alongside the albums of Richie Valens, Roy Orbison or Townes Van Zandt.
On the first album, War Elephant, McCauley performed most of the instrumentation himself, at times relying on additional help from New Hampshire band The Bohemians for studio support. In late 2007, Christopher and Dennis Ryan joined the band on bass and drums. In 2008, Andrew Tobiassen took over lead guitar to complete the band's current lineup.
A quick word of advice, Deer Tick. If anybody with a nickname like The Big Bopper ever asks you to hop on a plane with him, skip it and take a bus.
