Denison Witmer is likely one of the most underrated and underexposed artist in independent music today. Over the course of his 15 year career, Denison has recorded seven albums, along with numerous EPs. To say that he is prolific would be an understatement. Hailing from Lancaster, PA, Denison’s work has been compared to the likes of great songwriters Nick Drake and Cat Stevens. The soft delivery of his thoughtful lyrics along with the relentless touring, playing everywhere from coffee shops to bookstores, has attracted a very loyal following.
Last Fall, Denison released his latest album, Carry the Weight, on California label The Militia Group. The album is an extremely personal and honest effort for Witmer, who before sitting down to write it, found out he had a close friend diagnosed with cancer. Also, like many pre-album catalysts, Witmer experienced the pain that goes along with the demise of a serious relationship. Given the subject matter, one would think the album would very subdued and downtrodden, but if you listen closely, Witmer shows glimmers of hope within the pain.
This past Spring, Denison stopped by The Laundromatinee to play a few of selections from Carry The Weight. You can also find the series of cover songs Denison released as a lead-up to the album at My Old Kentucky Blog.
