Film School eased into our VIBES II performance space and commenced a massive pleasure assault upon our ears. Waves of noise, walls of sound and pulsing beats ping-ponged around the room cutting through the somewhat unbearable heat. As if they literally reached to the heavens or maybe down into the ashes, Film School infused themselves with pieces of their forefathers, bands like My Bloody Valentine, The Grateful Dead, Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins, and blended that power into a tornado of fuzzy rock.
Before they came to town and we booked them for a show at Locals Only, I'd only caught them live once before and only in a small chunk. The band had toured with local fav Margot & The Nuclear So & Sos, so many were familiar and excited. The term "shoegaze" got thrown around a lot in the previews and maybe my opinion is contrary to the popular one, but shoegaze is hardly an accurate term for this band's sound. Sure, there are elements, but Film School creates music that is much more likely to get you thrashing about than have you stuffing your hands in your pockets and staring at the floor as you sway back and forth.
Some may believe the band's musical roots and their many contemporaries may prevent them from ever reaching headliner level status, but they've carved out a nice place in the rock world. That night, the venue was full and the crowd was excited. Regardless of the critics, that speaks louder than anything else.
In their session with us, the band performed Compare, the first song written for their latest album Hideout, along with What I Meant To Say and 11:11.
