Well, we have here a session marred by a post-recording mishap and my bad camera work but salvaged by Justin Townes Earle and his tremendous talent. JTE joined The Laundromatinee for a backyard session at the home studio of Snapjoint Recordings. We ate a little, drank quite a bit and then knocked out three great songs - one from and just in time for Justin's new release Midnight At The Movies to be released by Bloodshot Records on March 9th, 2009.
This is the second time we'd been graced by JTE's presence, a frequent visitor with loads of fans in our small market. This is the first time we've been able to catch it all on camera though. Unfortunately though our regular videographers were unavailable and I had to step in behind the lens. It's funny looking back, believing everything was perfectly in focus, and then seeing my poor, untrained abilities rearing their ugly head. Luckily our still cam has an autofocus and gave us a good visual recording.
The son of Steve Earle and namesake of Townes Van Zandt whipped out a great cover of blues legend Mance Lipscomb's So Different Blues , The Good Life, the title track from his 2008 LP (one he's performed for us before actually) and a new track called They Killed John Henry.
Post-session, backing out of the driveway, Justin and crew hit a fire hydrant, nearly spraying water all over the yard and street, and busting a tire on their large passenger van. As water trickled out of the hydrant, we spent the next 45 minutes changing the tire, but Justin, no stranger to hardship, got dirty and greasy and did most of the work himself. He then sold out Radio Radio and played a tremendous show that evening.
