Little known fact : The very charming, now Brooklyn-based duo KaiserCartel actually have Indiana roots, so naturally, they have a lot of friends in the area and a lot of local support. Courtney Kaiser cut her teeth singing, since the age of two, in choirs around Indiana. Her solo career launched with many of the same influencers I happily now call my friends. Courtney met her beau, Benjamin Cartel one night at the Knitting Factory in New York and the rest, as they say is history.
The pair came through Indianapolis few times in 2008 and played small spaces and basements for some of those lucky supporters. Unfortunately, I was not among them. Both times, that I was aware of at least, I had other job or family commitments. So, I had about as much as you do to go on when I first was lucky enough to view this session. I can only say it made me ache that I missed them, and I yearn for the time when they return to her old stomping grounds.
What I can tell you, beyond this session, is that KaiserCartel's 2008 debut release, March Fourth, is quite a thing of simple beauty. Warm, inviting and lush, but not so lush that there might be too much going on for the project's two primaries to handle in a live setting. The music is cozy. It's as if you're getting your own private concert in a place as comfortable as your own living room. So, lean back in that recliner and kick your shoes off...
