When Nashville-based Mat Kearney released his first album on Columbia Records in 2006, he toured, incessantly, with the likes of Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, Jason Mraz and the Fray. To say his brand of pop music is simply accessible would likely be an insult. His songs have been featured on a slew of hit TV shows including Grey's Anatomy and Scrubs, and he headlined the first ever VH1 'You Oughta Know Tour.' I imagine many teenage girls, soft-hearted saps and AAA/adult contemporary radio fans have already anointed Kearney as a likely ascender to the throne of radio-friendly pop.
This year saw the release of City of Black & White, a well-received follow-up that blends piano-driven anthems with sometimes folky/sometimes funky guitar riffs. Kearney has chosen to tour with both Keane and The Helio Sequence, as well as his own headlining tour with Diane Birch, in support of the album.
Kearney has the singer-songwriter chops down, producing sweet, polished melodies most often compared to Chris Martin of Coldplay. He joined us this Summer at The Pop Machine, for a lovely acoustic-driven session.
