O’Death blend folk, bluegrass, punk, gypsy and rock with a high-energy stage show that generally builds into a frenzy of broken strings, sweat and flying hair. Bodies thrash, jump and crash into one another both on stage and within the crowd. Their 2008 release through Kemado Records, Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin, wasn't incredibly well-recieved by the critics, but we really enjoyed it. Maybe it's our roots glossing over it all, but I think the modern punk energy the band brings to this old music is really exciting. Some obviously question the band's authenticity, as all members live in New York and have very little connection to the South. But it is also probably this fact that gets the band any attention at all.
My first live taste of the band came in September of 2008 at The Americana Music Association Festival and Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. A crowd packed into Grimey's small room for the band that had been dubbed the "must see" of the festival. No one left disappointed.
Things were slightly tempered with the absence of a crowd on this cold Indiana day , but it was only a matter of time before clothes started peeling off and watery beads started forming on brows.
