The Los Angeles-based band Princeton was the first band we've ever hosted at my house for a session. For those that are married and own a home, you learn quickly that there are rules regarding one's house and they are set by the fairer of the sexes. As a man, you hopefully get one room and a garage and you fight like hell to keep them. There won't be much else for you to "reign over."
So, rule number one varies, but in my house you don't invite anyone over if the house isn't clean and presentable. Now we aren't talking presentable by your standards. There are only one set of standards that matter and they aren't your's. To husbands/guys who have lived like slobs most of their lives, this rule doesn't make much sense, but believe me, you don't want to break it once it has been laid down.
So before twin brothers Jesse and Matt Kivel and the rest of their band came calling, I had to do some house cleanin'. Once the house was back in shape, everyone came over and we got to mess everything up again. It was a really good time.
Before the session "officially" started, the band ran through covers from Fleetwood Mac, Guided By Voice, Neutral Milk Hotel and more to warm up. Some were good, some contained mumbled verses here an there, but it kept things fun and light. The vibe continued throughout the session and we all had a good time. Once complete, everyone headed out and I proceeded to follow rule number two in my house - once you mess everything up, clean it up before Mama gets home.
The band's 2008 EP release, Bloomsbury, was smart, clever and sophisticated baring promise of a bright future for these young men. You can read more about it over at MOKB.
