Roman Candle have been around for a long time, playing their first shows around Chapel Hill, NC in 1997. Since then, they’ve appeared on several record labels, released three LPs and a handful of EPs, and attracted (positive) attention from some of the biggest critics in indie music. The band is now based in Nashville, TN, but they were kind enough to come to Broad Ripple, IN for a little session with us, despite window trouble with their van.
Regarding their sound, one could probably compare them to Wilco or other bands that fuse indie rock and folk. What distinguishes Roman Candle from similar sounding acts, however, is their instrumentation and vocals. The keyboard and lead guitar music add much to the overall sound of the band, making them sound almost aerial at times. Then there’s front man Skip Matheny, who emphasizes the passion of their music with his unique voice. He doesn’t seem to hold anything back when he sings. The band is also known for their live performances, so go check them out if/when they play near you.
This session includes four songs from their 2009 release Oh Tall Tree in the Ear. While the songs sound a bit more stripped in this session than their studio counter-parts (limited electric guitar and percussion), the well crafted instrumentation still stands out, and Skip delivers his lyrics with the same energy he does at any live show. Be sure to pay special attention to the lead guitar keyboard work. They’re really pretty.
