Seth and Scott Avett have been bandmates since the late 1990s (and brothers even longer). In 1998, Seth's band Margo merged into Scott's band Nemo. After Nemo disbanded, the brothers decided to continue on together, adding stand-up bassist Bob Crawford to their group, recording and touring as The Avett Brothers. They released their first studio album, Country Was, in 2002 and in just a few short years have put out four addtional full-lengths, a couple of live albums and several EPs. Last year, the band's musical style attracted the shaggy gaze of Rick Rubin, who signed them to his American Recordings label. Their upcoming album I and Love and You is due out on the label in September 2009.
The brothers' music is delivered with an intense sincerity that evokes muggy sunsets over the rolling hills of their North Carolina home, sweet tea, and slow dancing around the fireflies. Their style has been been called Americana, folk-grass, alt. country, and the like. But really, no matter what you want to call it, this is music with a giant heart. And with a beard.
