Video Session : The Gay Blades

The Gay Blades are a New York City - by way of New Brunswick, New Jersey - duo who play rock 'n' roll "trash pop" full of swagger and snark.  Clark Westfield on lead vocals and  guitar with Puppy Mills banging away on the drums play modern day glam rock with nods and moves that pay homage to the forefathers of the genre - Freddie Mercury and David Bowie.  These guys write and play the kind of songs that might actually transcend the indie scene, but they dirty it all up enough to eliminate that overly commercial appeal.

The Gay Blades are another one of those acts doing their best to shatter the "nod and bob" lack of movement at indie rock shows.  They seem to poke fun at hipster cool while at the same time embracing a faux-aura of it.  It's really all part of the show, and the bottom line is these guys will show you how much more fun it can be to just cut loose and act the fool with some rock 'n' roll.  They'll show you it is simply better when you stop worrying about looking cool and just amp up.

The duo dumped a lot more musical depth into their debut album, Ghosts, and half-joke that they can't recreate the sound live - partly because they have no bass player in the live setting.  Some may take issue with that, but I think there is something cool about the band giving it's fans/audience two very different, but equally good, experiences.

The Gay Blades live in a weird world that isn't punk but isn't the MTV commercial rotation world either.  They could possibly reside in both and maybe all points inbetween.  I think that's what makes them a pretty great band...that type of versatility that simply ends up producing really good songs.
