To say our session with The Mary Onettes was without tension might be a bit generous, but to everyone's credit, and the professionalism of The Pop Machine, the outcome was quite excellent. The Mary Onettes were on a two week long cross-country van tour of their 2008 self-titled debut, so when the band reached central Indiana, they were a weary group. A long way from their native Sweden, the English language was not their strong suit nor was Swedish ours, so the language barrier led to a bit of miscommunication and frustration at times, but we all pulled together and everyone ended up quite happy with the outcome and each other.
The band filled the studio with their 80's new wave/romantic alternative pop-rock sound. Channelling the genre's greats, The Cure, New Order and Echo & The Bunnymen, they brought a modern freshness to a very retro sound. The Mary Onettes are true fans and connoisseurs of this era. Other bands may borrow elements from it, but The Mary Onettes seem to live and breath it. You could plug some of these songs right into those great teen drama/comedies of the era and nothing would ever miss a beat. It's that authenticity that gives their songs strength and avoids the campy or corny.
