I have told the story numerous times, probably enough to annoy MOKB's regular readers, about my relationship, pre-music career and pre-MOKB, with The Watson Twins. The short of it is, the twins and I went to college together, took art classes together and our families are friends. So naturally, I have an affinity for them that goes beyond their incredible talent as singers and musicians.
That said, let's not dwell in my past any longer. The twins found their way into the public eye as the backing vocalists/dancers for Jenny Lewis, of Rilo Kiley fame. They shined brightly on Lewis' 2006 release Rabbit Fur Coat. The two parties have since parted ways and the girls have signed their own contract with Vanguard Records. The Watson Twins released Fire Songs, their second full-length, his year. The girls harmonize throughout it as only sisters can. The songs blend country, folk, alternative and gospel in a slow fluid churn of yearning and melancholy. Beautiful and intimate "slow-burners" abound within the release.
Within the session, they take two classics and make them their own. The twin's rework of The Cure's Just Like Heaven is a more radical departure than their pretty straight-forward, yet beautiful, rendition of Bill Wither's Ain't No Sunshine. The three song medley that Ain't No Sunshine is contained in is so worth your time - make sure you check it out.
