Whether or not you believe in fate, you have to admit that some people are born to play music or at least born with the obvious choice to play music. Caitlin Rose is one of those people. Raised in Nashville by two parents heavily involved in the country music scene, it makes sense that Caitlin would want to follow in her parents' footsteps. Or somewhat follow. Caitlin doesn’t appear to be some pampered brat playing country music for her parents’ approval. She admittedly dropped out of college to focus on music and has a love of punk rock that clearly shows in the neo-country sound she now plays.
One could compare her to the popular duo She & Him, but Caitlin has a heavier edge, both lyrically and musically. Her song, “Spare Me,” featured here as well as on her 2010 release Own Side Now, may be a melodic country song on the surface, but its angsty take on love as “one more useless thing” put over simple chords and a quick tempo suggest that there’s more to her artistic ability than what her parents and the Nashville country scene taught her. She may take it down a little with her cover of The Deep Vibration’s “I Was Cruel,” but her song choice nevertheless complements the dark undertones in her otherwise upbeat, catchy music. And if her reputation serves her correctly, she’d prefer you smoke a cigarette while listening.
