Having just completed their winter tour of the American West with A Lull, Deleted Scenes stopped by the Big Car Service Center and shared two songs from their latest LP, Young People’s Church of the Air. In this session, the D.C. area quartet – consisting of Dan Scheuerman on guitar/lead vocals, Matt Dowling on keyboard, Brian Hospital on drums, and Dominic Campanaro on lead guitar – strip their brand of indie-pop/rock to deliver a tender, yet powerful performance.
“Ordination Day,” with its steady cadence and poppy, yet eerie melody, feels like a slow march for bitter-hearts, and Scheuerman seethes through a smile as he sings about internal youthful defiance. On “Bedbedbedbedbed,” the album’s single, Scheuerman discards his hostility and shows a gentle vulnerability as he croons, “You are a miraculous song in my head.” Deprived of its usual percussive backbeat, the love-song seems to float in the space before drifting away in search of the girl for whom it was written. It would be an impressive addition to the play-list you’re making for the indie-music loving girl or boy you like. Try it out, thank me later.
