For some of you, Disappears is THE coolest band you’ve never heard of. Formed just over two years ago by Brian Case and Graeme Gibson, they’ve released two well-received records, both on the totally-with-it Kranky imprint, and toured the US and Europe. Indie prom king John Dwyer is a former member, and Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley joined up in 2010. ‘Guider,’ ‘New Fast,’ and ‘Marigold’ are three shining examples of Disappears reverby and vocally remonstrative sound, performed at Vibes Music in Indianapolis for Laundromatinee.com.
‘Guider’ is the title-holder from the band’s most recent release. The song is centered on repetitive vocals stretched like a slingshot over guitars and all of their echoes, coupled with shimmering cymbals and an intense ability to make you move. ‘New Fast’ is spread on a bed of rockabilly without seeming dated or theme-y. The third song, ‘Marigold,’ is from debut album Lux. It balances precariously on the edgier side of the band’s punk and garage influences.
When shoegaze gets too hazy and garage rock feels too raw, Disappears’ secure fastening of the two is a luxury. The 2011 release, Guider, is available all over the place. Set yourself free and get it.
