Regarding the word “Elsinore,” there are several possible definitions. There’s the city in Denmark where Shakespeare set Hamlet; the small town in Utah; the lake and corresponding city in Sacramento, California; the historic theatre in Salem, Oregon; the car model by Honda; and last but not least, the indie rock band from Champaign, Illinois. Not a whole lot seems to connect the various definitions, but then again, maybe there’s some underlying synchronicity at work here and I’m too oblivious to see it. Have fun looking for it, and let me know if you find anything.
Moving right along, the band Elsinore has been hard at work making their upbeat brand of indie rock since 2004. The character of their sound can be found in their instrumentation, where a healthy dose of keyboard, vocal harmony, and tempo change bring their songs to life and set them apart from likeminded contemporaries. In the featured videos, Elsinore demonstrate their ability to write vivacious songs and play them with both grace and energy. Be sure to pay attention to the individual intricacies of each instrument, but don’t forget to take a step back and listen to the songs as whole, multi-layer works of music. In fact, go ahead and do that with every artist you listen to if you haven’t been doing it already.
Elsinore's latest record Yes Yes Yes is out now on Parasol Records.
