The Young Republic are all over the place when it comes to making music, but I mean that in a complimentary fashion. In the five videos featured here, the band demonstrates their talent for seamlessly weaving together country, folk, blues, rock, and jazz into melodic, almost poppy songs. The songs are fun and seemingly simplistic, but each member of the quintet brings their own distinctive intricacies to the songs, giving them depth and character. With so much variety to offer, it comes as no surprise that The Young Republic are a band more concerned with EPs than LPs.
When it comes to geography, The Young Republic are similarly scattered. They’re based in Nashville, yet they have school ties to Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, and they’re signed End of the Road Records, a UK based record company.
“An Artist. Am I? No.” is an upbeat tune that playfully questions the validity of ‘artist’ as a label and reminds one of Bob Dylan’s “Subterranean Homesick Blues.” Switching to a darker, more rhythmic sound is ‘Black Duck Blues,” a blues-esque sea chanty that would make The Decemberists proud. “Chocolate Jesus” is a sexy Tom Waits cover that blends blues, jazz, and folk. With chains taking the place of drumsticks, this song, much like the original, works best in a dingy, underground bar at night, but if you're in the office today, it’s still great in the daylight. The ballad “Shiloh” conjures images of an army marching to battle, while “My Old Kentucky Blog," is an all-in-good-fun take on the classic state anthem. Overall, The Young Republic are a pleasure to listen to and will ensure a joyful grin at the very least.
